May 10 | 12–4pm | Free
The Seaport Museum and FloodNet are hosting this fun-filled and informative afternoon exploring the connections between flooding, the communities it impacts, innovative technology like flood sensors, and how data can be transformed into creative storytelling and movement.
Start your experience at the all-ages Flood Resource Fair on the cobblestones of Water Street between Fulton and Beekman Streets. From 12pm to 4pm find hands-on activities, access to valuable flood preparedness resources, and interactive information about flooding and resiliency—particularly on the Lower East Side and across New York City. Collaborators include FloodNet, LES Ready!, Rainproof NYC, Waterfront Alliance, Citizens Committee for New York City, Center for NYC Neighborhoods, Ready New York, The Community Sensor Lab, New York Sea Grant, and more.
Then, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm, head over to the 1885 tall ship Wavertree at Pier 16 to learn about the Museum’s own history with flooding and resilience and for a movement-based storytelling activity that encourages participants to tell a story based on flood data through self expression and movement.
No registration is required to attend the Flood Resource Fair. Advanced registration is encouraged for the storytelling activity on Wavertree, and walk-ups are welcome as space allows.
About FloodNet
FloodNet is a cooperative of communities, researchers, and New York City government agencies working to better understand the frequency, severity, and impacts of flooding in New York City, especially in neighborhoods that are vulnerable to high tides, storm surge, and stormwater flooding.
FloodNet’s mission is to develop tools for real-time urban flood monitoring, implement these tools to measure flooding in New York City, and make flood data and monitoring tools available in a manner that is accessible and useful to stakeholders including residents, community-based organizations, government agencies, and researchers.
The FloodNet team is composed of researchers and other professionals at New York University, the City University of New York, and New York City government agencies who work in collaboration with stakeholders to collect and share data that contribute toward flood risk mitigation and building community flood resilience.
